The initial vision for the set was to have the main focus to be the kitchen and have all other scenes in the show revolve around said house. The kitchen itself was “scandinavian shaker style” to reflect the style of kitchen that a character like Grace, with her perfectionist ideals, may have. The other scenes take place on satellite stages on both stage left and right and rotate accordingly to the specific scene. The concept of the rotating platforms came from the theme of “revolving around the kitchen” as well as making a cost effective way to have multiple unique scenes (that are only show once) in the same area with different looks and effective masking. It's also important to note that this venue did not have a fly system, so scenery could not just be flown in and out. As mentioned before, the kitchen and family household are the primary focus. Given that only one scene takes place in each campgrounds, parking lot, counselors office, etc, we don’t want people seeing them the whole time and giving more weight to them than the story requires. The show begins with both satellites showing their “black wall” to the audience to lull the audience into believing that the kitchen is the only part of the set, this allows the reveal of the lunchroom with a fully painted background to be all the more impressive. The black walls also serve as a means to mask actors backstage, stage hands setting the next scene, and the setting of the location that takes place behind the wall itself.
