See Rules for UIL Theatrical Design. The very first thing we did as a group was identify various themes within the script and determine different ways that we could highlight the theme in our design choices. The theme that we settled on was "Calling out how it is socially acceptable to be prejudiced towards someone or something that is deemed "ugly". The medium to reflect this theme was the artworks and style of the last 80's street artist Jean-Michelle Basquiat whos' artwork was also deemed "ugly in his time". Next, we divided up the workload, each group member would tackle one design category and then we would trade to add our own artistic flair to each design. This allowed for a more concise design, all the designs followed the same theme, and elements from all designers were found throughout. I tackled costumes first, taking inspiration from Basquiat of course, but also Keith Harring, a close friend of Basquiat. Another important aspect of our design was separating the real and fictional worlds preset in this adaptation of the show. Mary lives in the real world and all elements related to that take inspiration from works of her time. Mary's design was inspired by "The Destruction of Sodom" for example. After switching designs with my partners, I also tackled, rendering the ground plan, modeling the set on Vectorworks, designing the inside of the brochure for our Special Marketing Event, managing a League High School Theatre Instagram account, plating everything on Photoshop as well as printing everything.
